Free Knitting Pattern - Happy Rainbow Hat
No matter what knitting project I’m working on I always have lots of scraps left over, most recently I have been knitting a rainbow blanket and whilst sat looking at the waste…I thought haha…lets turn this waste into a little knitted rainbow hat!
To knit my rainbow hat you will need:
50g Utterly Aran Yarn in Grey Mist (A)
2.5 metres scraps of Utterly Aran Yarn in pumpkin, cranberry, rhubarb, blackberry, pine, pistachio, river, ocean, earth and corn
4mm x 50cm circular knitting needles
Stitch marker, scissors, wide eye needle and a special few hours of peace and quiet.
You can use any aran weight yarn that has a similar yarn spec to the Utterly Aran yarn:
Yarn Weight: 50 grams per ball
Length: 100m per 50g approx
Needle Size: 4-5mm
Crochet hook: 4-5.5mm
Weight: Aran weight
Skill level: I would say that this is a easy pattern.
Abbreviations: k knit; k2tog knit 2 together; mm millimetre; p purl; rnd round; sts stitches
Tension: 17 sts and 26 rows
The knitting pattern:
Using 4mm knitting needles and yarn A cast on 80 sts evenly around the circular knitting needles, making sure not to twist the sts. Place a marker so you know when you have completed a rnd.
Rnd 1-15: [k2, p2] forty times.
Rnd 16-18: Knit.
The next rnd is where you will start adding the rainbow stripes, I have used the colours in the following combination pumpkin, cranberry, rhubarb, blackberry, pine, pistachio, river, ocean, earth and corn, you can choose your own combination
Rnd 17: change to a new rainbow colour and k the rnd.
Rnd 18-19: change to yarn A and k the rnd.
Repeat rnd 17-19 another eight times.
Next rnd : change to a new rainbow colour and k the rnd.
Next rnd : change to yarn A and k the rnd.
Next rnd : [k8, k2tog] eight times. 72 sts
Next rnd : k the rnd.
Next rnd : [k7, k2tog] eight times. 64 sts
Next rnd : k the rnd.
Next rnd : [k6, k2tog] eight times. 56 sts
Next rnd : k the rnd.
Next rnd : [k5, k2tog] eight times. 48 sts
Next rnd : k the rnd.
Next rnd : [k4, k2tog] eight times. 40 sts
Next rnd : k the rnd.
Next rnd : [k3, k2tog] eight times. 32 sts
Next rnd : k the rnd.
Next rnd : [k2, k2tog] eight times. 24 sts
Next rnd : [k1, k2tog] eight times. 16 sts
Next rnd : [k2tog] eight times. 8 sts
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
